Tag4 were contacted by Brighton´s local radio station, Juice 107.2 in at the beginning of 2004. Having been newly purchased by 'Festival Radio' the new owners where concerned that the existing IT structure was negatively affecting the day to day working environment and were keen to capitalise upon the potential benefits that IT could offer the station. The radio stations' IT infrastructure had for too long been a low priority and had suffered from low investment over the previous years.
Tag4 began by undertaking a detailed study of how IT was used within the building by all users, whether they be DJ's producers or office staff. This included analysis of working methods, networking, software and hardware, including desktops, laptops, office servers, the studio systems, the office network and associated broadband and ISDN connections. Included in this study was a detailed investigation of the employees IT experiences and how the current systems where effecting their working practice and methods.
After completing the initial study, Tag4 identified the key areas where the existing IT systems could be upgraded to dramatically improve the efficiency of the station while maintaining an extremely cost effective stance. We then went on to upgrade the IT infrestructure, replacing outmoded hardwhere and upgrading existing technology where possible. Once installed, the new systems increased both employee productivity and data security, providing backup, firewall and remote access facilities.
Being a high profile public facing company, Juice send and receive large volumes of email on a daily basis. Juice once again contacted Tag4 concerned that extremely high volumes of spam and viruses were becoming a major impediment to their day to day work. Large quantities of unsolicited mail were crippling their networks and costing users a substantial amount of time every day.
To resolve their problems, Tag4 installed a hardware based email solution developed by ourselves, afectionally known as 'The Spamurai'. This combines a custom built stateful inspection firewall with a high capacity SMTP engine and complex spam and antivirus filtering. Spamurai instantly stopped all spam and unsolicited mail, allowing users to regain control over their inbox and for the business once again secure their internal company networks.
Since the installation of our Spamurai unit in January 2004, there have been no virus outbreaks and levels of unsolicited spam has been dramatically reduced for all company employees. During March 2004, the Spamurai deleted over 8,000 viruses from inbound emails to station employees. A second Spamurai unit was subsequently installed within Juice's parent company, Festival Radio. This second Spamurai proved its worth almost immediately, stopping a SMTP denial of service attack (mail bomb) with no downtime or system outage. The Spamurai processed and removed nearly 5 million virus-infected emails over a period of two weeks during June 2004 with users experiencing no differences in their day to day work.
To expand on our work on their internal networks, Tag4 then went on to design and built a website for Juice during 2004. The new website provides a solid online marketing platform for the station whilst allowing non-technical staff to easily update data and provide realtime information and news on the station and other local events. Listeners can get involved with radio competitions; contact the DJ´s live on air, read daily DJ weblogs and listen to a live stream or the station over the internet.
