Babel Media is one of the Brighton digital media cluster´s biggest success stories. Employing over 200 staff in offices based in Brighton, Los Angeles, New Delhi and Montreal and listed 60th in the Sunday Times Tech Track 100, Babel Media is one of the major drivers behind the growth of outsourcing in the games and interactive entertainment industries and develops for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

The highly confidential nature of their work means that securing the boundaries between their digital content and the World Wide Web is absolutely essential, no mean feat considering the number of staff spread over such a wide area.

Babel Media had been using a proprietary web-filtering application to control Internet access within their organisation, built around a central database that stored all information on banned or illegal sites. This solution was difficult to manage, was proving unreliable and did not fit within their long term IT strategies.

The system developed by Tag4 allowed Babel to reduce the costs of system maintenance and upgrade, and provided an increased reliability and scalability for their users. Open standards were used for all bespoke code and this cross platform strategy allowed the application to be run on any hardware platform and any operating system: Windows, Proprietary Unix or Linux. It also means that Babel Media are in complete control of the solution without any supplier lock-in.

The project was essentially consultancy based, and involved Tag4 working closely with the technical staff at Babel Media allowing any solution developed to be readily available to all Babel´s technical staff, as well as ensuring that new technical skills were effectively transferred to the in-house people responsible for the day to day running of the infrastructure.

Solution benefits:
  • Open Source solution allowing access to all parts of the system and access to software source code.

  • No expensive licensing charges.

  • No vendor ´lock in´.

  • Caching proxy functionality, allowing better use of network bandwidth. Requests for commonly accessed sites will never leave the local LAN.

  • User updatable block lists, providing easy customisation of all site and content filtering.

  • Integration with existing Active directory groups.
